There are many reasons why companies decide to outsource their training needs or even purchase prepackaged training materials. For some companies, outsourcing employee training and development makes both financial and business sense. First and foremost, it is much cheaper to have an outside vendor create training than to hire a full time instructional designer(s), developers, technical guru's to accomplish tasks. Therefore, if a company only requires occasional training, it makes much more sense to hire an external instructional design/training company. Many companies, however, outsource training to supplement their internal resources. For instance, while an internal training department may be very good at instructional design, it may need assistance in the area of development or production. Also, some organizations do not have enough experience in the area they need training in and, therefore, need to rely on outside resources. For example, if the organization wants to move towards agile project management, but no one has any expertise in the area, outsourcing may be the best way to go. Another example when outsourcing is your best bet is if your organization is starting to use a new tool that no one in the company knows yet. Since no one in house can help with training, the two best ways to learn the tool are to either bring a professional training company in house or purchase an already existing training package. All in all, each organization should make its own decision as to what is best for its budget and needs. However, it is important to understand that, just like everything else, outsourcing has its pluses and minus; therefore, prior to making the decision to outsource your training initiatives, consider determining what the return on investment (ROI) is. Organize To prevent cognitive overload keep chunks of text narrow and break up larger chunks of text into bullet points or smaller paragraphs. Large, run-on chunks make the learners disengage and take them out of the learning experience, given that they simply aren't able to acquire and retain the knowledge in an effective manner. 2. Related values How? Patterns and color can often create a sense of order, and establish a relationship between core ideas or concepts within a module. What you can do is to find a pattern for the headings, subheadings, and key information. For example, you can show in italics the key words of each page in the module. This way, the learners will realize that these are the key pieces of knowledge that they'll need to learn and remember. 3. Contrast Contrasting colors and shapes will help the learners to stay focused and immersed in the eLearning course. For example, if you choose two font colors that complement one another, this will enhance the overall design of the module, as well as it will appeal to the learners’ visual sensibilities. By providing contrast, you can also highlight important aspects of the curriculum or draw the learners’ eyes to a concept that they need to mentally absorb. 4.Navigation Learners need to be able to navigate through the eLearning course without any frustration or confusion involved. Always ensure that links are noticeable on the page and active, instead of hindering with various design elements. If you'd like to learn more about how to incorporate design elements for your courses, come join us in an elearning workshop this fall covering assets, terminology, content management and the systems needed to run successful courses, content, systems, programs.
